Built Perspectives: Designing with Purpose

December 19, 2025

In this edition of Built Perspectives, we put the spotlight on Martin Pirnie, Design Principal, who shares his journey of creativity, purpose, and leadership in architecture.

For Martin, architecture is both a creative pursuit and a responsibility. His portfolio ranges from culturally grounded residential design to complex hospitality, residential, and leisure developments, all defined by a balance of imagination, discipline, and purposeful design.

What inspired you to become an architect?

"I always wanted to do something creative and as an architect you have the opportunity do something endlessly creative but also something that can have a positive impact on people’s lives and the world we live in and stands forever."

What’s one design challenge you’ve turned into an opportunity?

"I think part of our job is turning challenges into opportunities, I designed a Villa for a Client that was right opposite a shopping mall in Dubai. Instead of looking outward, the villa was designed as a modern Arabic Courtyard Villa with everything oriented towards, and circulating around, this inner courtyard space creating a peaceful, shaded private centre to the Villa that links to the historical architecture of Dubai rather than trying to capture external views that did not exist."

Can you share a specific experience or project that significantly impacted your approach to design?

"I worked on a very large 5 Billion AED project in Dubai called The Island (a new island off Jumeirah Beach for MGM consisting of large hotels, extensive F&B, multiple Entertainment components etc.) The scale of the project required a clear vision, a clear set of design fundamentals that set the guidelines for the project, and complete buy in from all stakeholders.

I learnt from this process to communicate and establish the vision and strong design principles early, maintain these principles throughout the design stages including regular reviews against them to ensure a great end product."

As Renzo Piano once said, “One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again.”
